The New York City Police Department has launched an internal investigation into an incident in Staten Island, NY. In the latest Tech Explosion “Viral Today!” video, a video that has gone viral, a man is seen being arrested by being placed initially in a chokehold in order to “take him down”. Apparently the man was accused of selling untaxed cigarettes and had been arrested over 30 times in the past.

In the cellphone video, the man is seen being approached by plainclothes NYPD Police officers, who confront the individual, but then wait for uniformed officers to arrive for backup.

As soon as the uniformed officers arrive, one of the plainclothes officers puts the man in a chokehold, takes him to the ground and then presses on the man’s head. In the video, the man is heard saying over and over “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe…” At the end of the video, the man is seen laying motionless.

This is just the latest example of how cellphone videos are being taken by everyone, everywhere. Without this video evidence, this case would be much more difficult to investigate. It’s the technology of the widespread use of cellphones that is creating a situation where nothing can be hidden.
